Behind the glass...
This inspiration was channeled into Dallas's many creative outlets over the years, including handicrafts, metal-working, soap and candle-making, and painting, to name a few.
In 2004, Dallas took a stained glass course at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon as an evening course. After the first night's class, he knew that he had finally found his medium, drawn in by the colours and patterns of stained glass. He continued working in stained glass for most of that year, before coming across the art of fused glass while researching designs and patterns in stained glass. Intrigued, he looked further into fused glass and bought his first kiln in the fall of 2004. After the first firing, he knew that he was hooked, and has never looked back.
Self-taught, Dallas considers each time he steps into his home studio a chance to learn and try something new, by embracing the principles of wabi-sabi, the Japanese concept of beauty as being "imperfect, impermanent and incomplete." In the words of Richard Powell, this concept works by "acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect." By accepting these ideals, one learns to appreciate the small details and touches that signify a piece has indeed been made hand, rather than churned out of a factory. When working on a piece, the artist is putting some of themselves into that item, and the feelings, emotions and energy of that piece become something for you to hold onto when you take some of their work to make your own.
